Mahaguthi, Crafts with a Conscience, Kathmandu
In 1925 a follower of Mahatma Gandhi had a dream of starting an ashram, or spiritual community, where women "refugees" (widowed or deserted by their husbands) could come with their children and find a safe haven. The ashram he founded continues to provide shelter, food, clothing, medical care, education, and vocational training in weaving and tailoring for the women and their children. Today, proceeds from the sales of handcrafts made by nearly 80 producer groups affiliated with the non-profit Gandhi Charitable Trust and its Mahaguthi shops in Kathmandu help support the women and children who live at the ashram and also provide support services to the producer groups.

Interface Trading, Dakar.  Interface Trading represents small artisan groups in Senegal, a former French colony in West Africa. Dakar, its capital, is the western-most city in Africa. As the center of West African culture, Dakar is host to many cultural events and drumming plays a big role in many of these events. The sabar drums (a set of 5-7 tuned drums) are traditionally popular with members of the Woloff tribe, the largest tribal group in Senegal. The Manding-speaking people of Guinea, Mali, and Senegal are experts at drumming and have made the Djembe, a goblet-shaped hand drum, usually carved from one piece of wood and covered with goat or antelope skin, popular throughout the world.
