Cheek-A-Mo Designs, Inc. was founded by a first time mom who was frustrated with baby clothing that made dressing and diaper changes difficult.   Some baby clothing is just not very practical, since babies have soft and wobbly head and necks, and babies need frequent diaper changes.  The founder soon began to notice that conventional cotton clothing sometimes irritated her baby's sensitive skin.  These factors motivated her to search for organic clothing that made more sense.  In addition, finding things that were "natural" like it claims on the label became increasing difficult and it became a concern.  It was hard to find herbs or health products that claimed to be natural and was free of toxic ingredients like methylparaben and/or propylparaben, preservatives commonly found in everyday products such as shampoo and lotions.

So why Organic? For one, it is better for the environment and two, better for our health.  More energy is now used than ever to till, cultivate and harvest all the crops in the U.S.  Conventional cotton occupies only 3% of the world's farmland, but uses 25% of the world's chemical pesticides and fertilizers.  GMO (genetically modified) cotton now accounts for 75% of conventional crop grown in the United States.  In the U.S. alone, it's estimated that 800 million pounds of pesticides will be used on cotton each year.  Cotton ranks number 3 in crops with the heaviest pesticide use in the world.  Some of the chemical used on conventional cotton include the infamous defoliant Paraquat and insecticides like Parathion which is 60 times more toxic than DDT!  5 out of 9 pesticides used on cotton are cancer causing chemicals. 

With organic farming, crops are rotated to protect the soil and farmers use compost and naturally derived mineral and plant products for fertilizers.  And most importantly, what happens to the planet, the quality of things, the intention behind the invention, what your baby uses, eat, smells and touches are all great reasons to buy organic.  The benefit of producing cotton organically to the consumer, especially our babies, is the softness and quality that only organic cotton can provide.
